Bulgaria: Lies and Politics Photo by Yuliana Nikolova (Sofia Photo Agency)

On April Fools' Day it makes sense to ask who the biggest liars are, and that's exactly what a group of young Bulgarians from the Youth Initiatives 2004 did on Sunday.

It should come as no surprise that politicians dominated the top ten.

In fact, the only notable exception at the top of the rankings was Hristo Stoitchkov, the manager of the national football team, football being of course the other issue, besides politics, on which every Bulgarian has an opinion, as they say.

The fact that politicians lie, both before and after elections, is no surprise. But they should take note of the results of this impromptu poll, because it shows which politicians Bulgarians listen the most to.

Bulgaria joined the European Union three months ago, to the day, but ranks last or close to last in the bloc on just about every single standard of life indicator.

Politicians are, perhaps rightfully, blamed the most for this state of affairs, but it is indicative how it is mostly members of the ruling coalition that are seen as liars.

Socialists Emilia Maslarova, Georgi Parvanov and Sergey Stanishev, as well as their coalition partners Ahmed Dogan and Simeon Saxe-Coburg, feature heavily at the top of the rankings.

Some may see it as a sure sign of their plunging popularity in the opinion polls. But surveys over the last year show all three ruling parties enjoying decent to healthy public support.

Rightist parties, instead, fare so badly, it is as if Bulgarians cannot be bothered with listening to their lies.

So the ruling coalition can take heart in the results of this poll - even though people consider them liars, it does not seem as if they face any challenge. Yet.
