Iranian Protesters Attack British Embassy in Tehran

About 200 protesters threw rocks and firecrackers at the British Embassy in Tehran on Sunday, calling for the expulsion of the British ambassador because of the recent row between the two countries, the Associated Press reported.

Iranian police prevented the protesters, who chanted "Death to Britain", from entering the embassy.

Relations between the two countries have soured after Iran captured 15 British sailors on March 23 in the Shatt al-Arab river channel.

Both the UK and the US claim the sailors were in the Iraqi part of the channel, which has been the subject of tension between Iran and Iraq for decades.

Since then, Britain has virtually frozen relations with Iran, who is demanding an apology for trespass.

British government and defense officials refused to discuss a report that claimed a Royal Navy captain or commodore would be sent to Tehran as a special envoy to negotiate the return of the personnel.

The official would deliver an assurance that British naval crews would never deliberately enter Iranian waters without permission, the Sunday Telegraph newspaper reported.

The paper also carried the results of a poll, which shows that 40% of Britons back a diplomatic solution to the conflict, stopping short of an outright apology. Some 26% believe Britain should apologize.

Only seven percent favor preparing for military action at this stage.
