The centrist party of Bulgaria's former king has been given the green light to register for the first elections for MEPs with 15,000 signatures to back its runners.

"Bulgarians can best show that the EU entry is a national strategic goal by casting a vote in the elections for MEPs," former Defence Minister Nikolay Svinarov said after joining the sign-up campaign in front of Saint Sofia church in the capital.

He stressed that the founder and leader of the party, former king Simeon Saxe-Coburg, will take an active part in the pre-election campaign.

Meanwhile State Administration Minister Nikolay Vassilev showed confidence that the party will gain three seats in the European parliament. He was on a visit to the Black Sea town of Varna.

Surveys, however, show that members of Simeon II National Movement don't stand a big chance to make their way to the European Parliament.

In an election, which is hardly expected to quicken the pulse of the voters, the voters' sentiments for the centrist party mark a fall and support grinds at just 2.5 %, according to data of the National Center for Public Opinion Research.
