The fifteen British sailors, held by Iran, could be tried for violating international law, Iran's ambassador to Russia said, as cited by Iran's state news agency IRNA.

Gholam-Reza Ansari told Russian television Vesti-24 on Friday that Iran had launched a legal investigation of the British sailors. "They will be tried if there is enough evidence of guilt," Ansari said.

The fifteen British Royal Navy sailors and marines were seized last Friday while conducting a routine inspection of a merchant vessel at the northern end of the Persian Gulf. Iran says they strayed into Iranian territorial waters, a claim which the UK denies.

An Iranian TV channel have broadcast footage, showing two of the 15 detained British sailors, confessing they strayed into Iranian territorial waters.

The Foreign Office described the "confession" videos as "disgraceful exploitation".
