Tony Snow, White House press secretary and survivor of colon cancer, will have to undergo chemotherapy after his cancer metastasised to his liver, the White House announced.
Snow informed President Bush this morning by telephone that the growth removed from his lower abdomen on Monday was cancerous and that the cancer had spread to his liver, Deputy Press Secretary Dana Perino said in a tearful report from the podium of the press briefing room.
"He said he is going to be going after it as aggressively as he can,'' Perino said. ""If anyone can beat it again, it's Tony Snow.''
President Bush made a brief statement to reporters in the Rose Garden, saying he looked forward to the day when Snow returns to the White House.
"His attitude is one that he is not going to let this whip him," Bush said. "My attitude is that we need to pray for him."
Robert Anthony "Tony" Snow became the third individual to serve as White House press secretary under President Bush. It is the second Presidential administration in which Snow has been employed, having worked for President George H. W. Bush as chief speechwriter and Deputy Assistant of Media Affairs.
Between his two White House stints, Snow was a broadcaster and newspaper columnist.
