Sofia Mayor Boyko Borisov's center-rightist GERB formation became the first party to register for the May 20 European Parliament vote on Monday.
GERB leader Tsvetan Tsvetanov submitted a list of over 20,000 signatures supporting the party's bid at 9 a.m. on Monday, the first day of registration for the elections.
The party's leader explained the hurry to register, saying that it was done to avoid complications caused by the ambiguous nature of the electoral law.
If another political party or coalition registers first using its emblematic name, then it would benefit from GERB's political brand, according to Tzvetanov, and GERB would be forced to find an alternative identification for itself.
The party ranks second in opinion polls ahead of the European Parliament vote on May 20, despite only being set up last year, due to the high approval ranking of its unofficial leader, Sofia mayor and the country's former top cop Boyko Borisov.
