Leaders of all 27 EU member states gathered in Berlin to mark Unions 50th anniversary.

Half a century ago on March 25 was signed the Treaty of the European Economic Community.

The 27 leaders' meeting will end with adopting a declaration in which will be written all of United Europe's achievements and will be inscribed its goals for the next 50 years.

The celebrations for marking the day started at 12:30 Berlin time in the German Historical Museum. Angela Merkel, chancellor of Germany, which is currently holding the EU rotating presidency, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and Chairman of the EP Hans Gert Poettering will deliver their speeches later in the day. The three of them will put their signature under the special declaration.

The declaration was written in the every day language of common people and all the EU clichГ©s which flood all declarations and documents of the EU institutions were avoided. This was done with the purpose to show that the EU is a project, created in the name of its citizen's wellbeing.

On of the first paragraphs of the declaration is dedicated to the dignity and rights of the European citizens. Thanks to the aspiration after freedom of the people from Central and Eastern Europe, the continent has finally managed to overcome the unnatural division, the document states.

Fight against terrorism and organized crime, protection of rights and freedoms, development of a joint energy policy and protection of the environment were set as EU's goals that have to be achieved in the next 50 years.

The official celebrations, in which Bulgaria's President Georgi Parvanov will also take part, will end with a picture of all the 27 leaders on front of the Brandenburg Gate, which is the symbol of United Europe.
