The ex criminal and drug addict John Bird announced Thursday he is to stand for the post Mayor of London as an independent candidate on the elections in 2008.
The Tories' supporter is the founder of the news and current affairs magazine Big Issue, which provides opportunities for people facing homelessness and unemployment.
"I will be the mayor of the streets," Bird said, adding he will fight against the crime among the youngsters.
John Bird is so devoted to the poor and the underdog as he himself was made homeless at the age of seven and in prison by the time he was a teenager.
His name is tied up to the attempts at modernizing the UK's conservative party but still many of its members arch their eyebrows when it comes to Bird's past.
