Bulgaria: The Twilight Zone Photo by Kameliya Atanasova (Sofia Photo Agency)

The majority of Bulgarians have no clue on how to vote for MEPs, a survey says but something tells me that is the least of the problems politicians are facing today.

Seeing how voter turnout in the last several elections has been lagging and the indifference most people show towards these particular issues, parties should be worried about managing to actually get citizens to reach the polling stations this time.

The impotence of the government and traffic police when it comes to taming the wild drivers could be one of the reasons why people won't bother with voting May 20. After all, with the tragedies Bulgaria has seen lately, our representation in Strasbourg and Brussels seems to be at the bottom of the list. But a much stronger incentive for not voting is that now MEPs are too abstract for the average Bulgarian. The proof for that lies in the attempt to nominate the five Libya-jailed nurses and in the candidates' lists of the parties. Nominating people with no experience in international relations or politics simply because they have earned the sympathy of the people or represent a certain cause is a laughable attempt to bring voters to the ballot-boxes and it shows that even those who should know the inside out of politics are missing the point.

What the MEPs do, what they would earn, what their word would be worth in the European Parliament - the answers to all these questions seem to fall in the twilight zone. Until these are all clearly explained to the public, Music Idol or VIP Brother stand a much bigger chance of moving the voters.
