French-German Arte TV has aired a series of films dedicated on Bulgaria to mark the country's EU accession.

For an hour and a half Bulgaria was presented in a contrast-filled portrait that focused on the "odd fate" of Simeon Saxe-Coburg, the country's boom and its natural, historical and cultural landmarks.

The first of the three films was entirely dedicated to Saxe-Coburg, telling the story of how he assumed the throne when he was just six years old, was exiled for close to half a century and return to the country as its Prime Minister in 2001. It presented Bulgaria as a country that still has a lot of obstacles to its economic development and has undertaken a tough battle with poverty and organized crime.

The "Boom of Bulgaria" report was dedicated to the first civic unrest against corruption and malfeasant officials. It focused on the problems in the construction sector and the case of the beach of Irakli, where attempts of rising illegal buildings continue. The author of the film underlined that he had been threatened and followed while filming in Bulgaria.

The series ended with a portrayal of Bulgaria's landmarks, the Black Sea region, Pliska, Veliko Tarnovo, Sofia and Plovdiv.
