The right-wing hard-liners from Democrats for Strong Bulgaria warned of the danger of vesting what they called Russia's "Trojan horses" with the power of European parliamentarians.

"We need MEPs who know how to read and understand Bulgaria's interests, unlike what we have witnessed for the last six years. We need MEPs, who will not turn Bulgaria into Russia's Trojan horse in the European Parliament, " said leader and former prime minister Ivan Kostov. He spoke at a meeting for drawing out the party's MEP ticket.

"We will demand that the party's MEPs act in a decisive, brave and competent manner," he added.

Assen Agov, Svetoslav Malinov, Konstantin Dimitrov and Ivan Ivanov are among the names to appear on the ticket of the party.

The youngest runner is Daniel Mitov, 29, a graduate in political science and European integration.

Konstantin Dimitrov will lead the ticket.

Bulgaria, which joined the European Union on January 1, 2007, will hold its first elections for members of the European Parliament on May 20.

Currently Bulgaria has 18 and Romania 35 MEPs at the European Parliament. They enjoy full-fledged rights, but are delegated by their parliamentary represented parties instead of elected by general suffrage.
