New York paused for moments of silence at 8:46 a.m. EST and again seventeen minutes later on Monday to commemorate the six-month anniversary of the devastating attacks on the World Trade Center that took the lives of nearly 3,000 people. "Look into your heart to remember those that are no longer with us," New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said to the crowd. "Think, what would those people have wanted us to do. "I think they would have wanted us to make a better world. They would have wanted us to show the terrorists that they cannot defeat us. They would want us to make sure we build a life where people can go and practice their religion, where people can go and say what they want to say," he said.In Washington, President Bush joined members of Congress and 150 ambassadors representing countries around the world for a midmorning ceremony on the south lawn of the White House."Every terrorist must be made to live as an international fugitive,"Bush told an audience at the White House that included victims' relatives, members of Congress and the ambassadors of America's main allies. "Men with no respect for life must never be allowed to control the ultimate instruments of death," he added.
