The key to understanding the way Bulgaria is run now is Gogol's play, The Government Inspector. True, all governments around the world seem to have taken not as a satire the book, which tells about everyone lying happily to each other. Yet it is weird when the media joins the frictionless engine of deceit. Especially when the media does it unaware.

An experienced surgeon was fired this week from Pirogov emergency hospital after performing a successful operation. And asking for a bribe of more than BGN 1000. He got BGN 300 under the counter and entered the news after his patient alerted the media.

At first sight this is a fine example of how to combat corruption. But when it headlines the news broadcasts for three days in a row, this is called manipulation. It could have been ridiculous, if it wasn't a life-and-death issue. Literally.

I can't avoid remembering that the ruling parties' proposal for reforms in the health care system aimed to make people pay more. The argument ran that the people now are paying anyway and it would only be better if the money was given over the counter. The wide coverage that the news, if that is any news at all, just came to boost this argument.

It is not only a crime, but also a sin to ask money from a sick man. But aren't the derelict hospitals and the shortage for doctors and nurses a sin too? Why not local media chase with the same dogged persistency issues that can bring about healthy reforms to the nearly dead heath care system if they want to impress, help and cheer up their exhausted nation of an audience? And not just leave it gloating over a fallen man.
