Nowadays people are paying more and more attention to what they eat as healthy lifestyle is a real topical issue. Do we really know however what we put on our tables? Do we notice the labels and if yes, are they telling us something at all?

There are often some strange symbols, which form the biggest part of the ingredients' list at the back of every pack. In most of the cases these are several numbers, preceded by the letter E. Under the complex combinations are actually hidden the codes of dozens of coloring agents, additives and substances, which improve the taste.

It turned out that a considerable part of them are harmful and for ages their usage has been banned with law in many European, US and Australian cities.

Almost none of the goods' producers, however, inform the consumers about the presence of the dangerous ingredients, let alone the side effects they have on the human body. Such unscrupulousness proves culpable when becoming aware of the fact that every single day we buy to our children suck-ups, which contain the poisonous additives!

It is true that once the producers added cocaine and heroine to some drinks or medicines. But that occurred more than 100 years ago! We are already living in the 21st century and such outrages are unacceptable.

European regulations for foodstuffs' registration are quite strict. Every company however is allowed to offer its products in three variants: for interior consumption, for export in developed countries, where control on additives is firm, and for export in developing countries, such as Bulgaria.

That is the reason why often foodstuffs of poor quality are offered on the Bulgarian market. There are some incomprehensible words on the labels but they are put only because the producers need to wash their hands. And it is up to you to choose which product to buy. If you manage to decode the symbols, of course...

Goods with three, four or six harmful ingredients are also being sold on the stands even in the largest supermarkets all over the globe. Surprisingly or not, many kinds of cookies, juices, souses, spices, sausages, soft drinks and even chewing gums are among them.

Chinese food also contains a particularly harmful for the health substance, called sodium glutamate. It was proved to cause headache, fits and stomach swelling. The phenomenon is known as the Chinese syndrome.

Bulgarian legislation does not prohibit the dangerous additives but only restricts the doses, in which they are used. To top it all off, the list of such ingredients is considered confidential information, kept by Bulgaria's Consumption Federation, chairman Pavel Karlev explained.

The risk of their consumption is estimated exclusively by the World Health Organization. Analyses of the additives themselves and their impact on the people's health are in progress.

Hopefully, Bulgarians will be informed about the results in time.
