STANDART DAILY: UDF TAKE POLITICAL ASPIRIN

Politics | June 19, 2001, Tuesday // 00:00

The question of the retirement of the one who lost the elections is both trivially boring and specifically important. Boring because nothing new is hidden in it - it's only the first question asked. It is important because of the indefiniteness of the answer and its consequences. In this case not only the roles in the power have been changed. Kostov has seemingly started speaking like Simeon - 'we shall see, at the right place, when it is timely...' Only few weeks ago the UDF members just could not believe in the overwhelming rating of Simeon and everything seemed to them a kind of a simple joke or a dream. Now they are hardly comprehending that actually the unthinkable became reality. A man created a political force which in only two months has managed to made pointless the four years of governing of the UtdDF. Or putting it more precise, proved their ineffectiveness. Thus, while their misleading before the elections resulted in the negative campaign, today the landslide defeat prevents them from seeing that they have won a modicum of something. However unbelievable it may sound. Firstly, this is the debate on Kostov's resignation. Also as much unbelievable weeks ago taking into consideration the character and the behavior of the Commander. After the election failure in Great Britain it took Haig a couple of minutes to hand in his resignation. For Alexander Tomov it took few hours. What about Kostov? Another useful thing is the debate concerning the future participation of the UDF (UtdDF) in the prospective government. In this sense the recommendation of Petar Stoyanov is unambiguous. Moreover that Simeon himself manifested his positive attitude to the coalition ruling. However, asking at the same time from the 'Standart' how on earth the ones who had been most arrogant and defamatory to the movement would stand aside and say: 'Let's negotiate now'. Last but not least the landslide victory of the NMS II has hidden the UtdDF's failure in another aspect - that of the controversy with the BSP. Simeon appears now a screen shadowing another humiliating fact - a real opportunity for the democrats to loose in a consecutive direct combat with the socialists. From this point of view Parvanov has some more reasons for celebration. But the point of his resignation is also put on the agenda. One thing is clear - the program of the NMS II is neither that much populist, nor that much 'black capitalism' or 'pink socialism. In about 80 days after April 6 the answers were given as to who the winner will be and the kind of ruling. We have only to wait for the main answer - in 800 days from now.
