Bulgaria: Of iPods and EU Commissioners Photo by Nadya Kotseva (Sofia Photo Agency)

Bulgaria's European commissioner Meglena Kuneva ticked off a lot of technology buffs by taking a swipe at Apple's iPod at the weekend, but could her misstep actually bring about something good?

In an interview to the German tabloid Focus, she criticized Apple for selling music via its iTunes Store that can be played only on an iPod, another Apple product.

"Do you think it's fine that a CD plays in all CD players but that an iTunes song only plays in an iPod? I don't. Something has to change," Kuneva was quoted as saying.

Yes, Ms. Kuneva, something has to change - and that's your advisers.

Although you might think it's a carbon copy of the EU's successful bid to stop Microsoft from bundling its Internet Explorer web-browser with the Windows operating system, it's anything but, Ms. Kuneva.

Microsoft abused its monopoly position to impose another product, what Apple does is an industry norm.

I am not trying to exonerate Apple here, what I am trying to say is - Ms. Kuneva, you are barking up the wrong tree.

It's no secret that Apple, Microsoft, Napster and others have to use digital rights management (DRM) technologies, which encrypts the data to prevent copyright violation, as demanded by record labels.

And that, Ms. Kuneva, opens up a much bigger can of worms - protecting consumers from the exorbitant prices charged by copyright holders. Think you can deal with that? Will you even try?
