On the day that Europe commemorates terrorism victims, Bulgarians anxiously followed reports to see what new travesty Libya will come up with this time.

There are different kinds of terrorism - there's fanatics who fly planes into buildings, vengeful militants who blow up passenger trains, hooded individuals who make demands on this or that country... But if you ask any Bulgarian, keeping five mothers locked away on bogus charges also falls in that category. Especially when jail time has been "spiced up" with all kinds of torture, physical and psychological.

Terrorism is a hard word to grasp, especially nowadays, but here's what the Miriam-Webster dictionary gives as a definition: the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion. Terror being defined as a state of intense fear, I wonder if there is any other way to describe the condition of the five Bulgarians and their families, especially in those first days and weeks.

And now they are forced to relive all this again, and as defendants in a slander case. What kind of a twisted justice system places a raped and tortured woman with the scars to show for it in the role of the aggressor, I wonder. And the answer is - the same one that is ready to take the lives of innocent people just to save its own hide.

Shameful, ridiculous, disgraceful... those were just some of the words used to describe the new trial against the nurses. And yet no one dared use the word terror, probably afraid of the political connotations it has taken. But that is exactly what the five had been subjected to and are now made to go through again.

"What if the nurses were American?" some of their supporters asked today. Really, what if...
