Bulgaria's MPs only had to set the date for the MEP elections, for rivaling parties to pull out the heavy artillery. In this case their weapons of choice seem to be stinkbombs that they toss each other's way.

Sofia Mayor Boyko Borisov claims the US article that pegged him as Bulgaria's most powerful politician and a buddy of all local mobsters is a setup aimed at unnerving his numerous supporters. Unless the financial institutions and Swiss investigators who came up with a 200-page report on Borissov's shady ties are named, the mayor will probably spin the bad press to his advantage, adding conspiracy freaks to his list of supporters.

And while all the elements seem to be lined up to foil the election domination plan of the mayor, rightists don't really need anyone else to spoil their chances at securing a few MEP seats. Knowing that the European People's Party may kick out the Union of Democratic Forces from their list doesn't help the right-wing's cause too much. And with Nadezhda Mihaylova turning yet again on the Union's leader Petar Stoyanov, their chances are slimming by the second.

Scandals have been piling up around the MEP elections ever since the Bulgarian politicians realized they may have a chance for a nice seat abroad. The laws around the election, the insane ideas of who to nominate, the dirty games that are already in the works...if we do manage to pull those elections without making a complete joke of the country I would be genuinely surprised.
