As medics gathered to protest throughout Bulgaria, the news broke of a hospital that had been scamming on the health insurance fund cash. While the Health Minister complains that the fund is poor and the government is scurrying to figure ways for making people pay larger taxes, some have been caught with their hand in the cookie jar and crumbs all over their shirt.
I couldn't agree more with some of the demands doctors make - mainly, if we want to put an end to the corruption in the health system, people who have spent six to ten years studying their profession should receive adequate pay. But I really really doubt that the way to do that is cheating the system. Every single day a sick person in Bulgaria gets told that the health fund should cover this or that treatment but it is currently out of slips, cash, medicines, you name it. And that's because instead of finding the legal way to get their deserved paycheck, medics and administrators try to cheat the system, pay off old debts and do God knows what else. In the end they end up cheating their own and, most importantly, the Bulgarians who all surrender a large chunk of their own paycheck only to get zilch in return.
So, dear doctors, next time you are about to protest, take a long hard look at your own administration, think of all the cash you have demanded from people who had all the right to receive free treatment and stop for a second to really ponder this. Who are you trying to cheat?
