Bulgaria is second in the world in children obesity, shows a report of the Alexandrovska Hospital, which was presented on Monday.

"The first place is expectedly occupied by the children in the USA," head of the eating disorders department Mitko Rigov said.

The report reveals that 19% of the Bulgarian boys aged between 14 and 15 are overweight and 7.5 % suffer from obesity. The percentage for girls in the same age group is 16% overweight, while another 3.6% fight obesity.

More than one million Bulgarians over 18 years of age suffer from obesity - 40 % of them are men and 34% - women.

Meanwhile a US study suggested that girls who are overweight at the age of three risk reaching puberty as early as nine years old.

The research, published in the journal Pediatrics, adds to mounting evidence suggesting childhood obesity is causing the trend of earlier puberty in girls.

Studies suggest girls who reach puberty earlier than the "normal" age of 10 and above also start drinking alcohol and begin having sexual intercourse sooner. They are also at increased risk of certain cancers, including breast cancer.
