Bulgaria: Cancer for Peanuts Photo by Yuliana Nikolova (Sofia Photo Agency)

My father lost his battle to cancer exactly three weeks ago, on Monday night. Small wonder it is nothing but cynicism that I see in the breaking news about the "tradition" of importing cancerous peanuts to Bulgaria. I can also imagine how cynical it sounds to those 300,000 cancer sufferers in Bulgaria and to the relatives and friends of those, who are already not among us.

Even if the story is cooked up to settle scores between business rivals, there is a peanut of truth buried in it. And its taste is just as sour as the state of the state itself.

A scandal that starts with an anonymous e-mail to a ministry and leads to the discovery of poisonous food, freely let into the country, does not bid any good for those in power. A desperate call on cancer sufferers to sue the state for the lax border control does not bid any good for anyone.

In their loftier moments Bulgarian politicians like to say we live free in a free country. From loftier places, such as Mount Shipka, densely populated on March 3 by socialists and their pieties of the past, the people below probably appear real free and happy. But instead of the clichГ©d speeches that do nothing but profane the sacred holiday, I would want to see at least one Bulgarian official do what he is preaching.

How comes that in an age of mea culpa it is only Bulgarian politicians who never repent? How comes no one goes all-out when reality bites and explains how such an atrocious irresponsibility has happened to occur? An anonymous e-mail cannot do it. Neither can a parliamentary rejection of a no-confidence vote.
