Bulgarian Astronomers Get Ready for Lunar Occultation of Saturn

Society | March 1, 2007, Thursday // 00:00

Bulgaria will become a one-night stage of an astronomical event on Thursday night.

Astronomers in the country, which is within the narrow path of the cosmic show, will observe the so-called "occultation" of planet Saturn by the Moon. The occultation will be visible on the west horizon. Astronomers from the Varna observatory will place their observation equipment on the west pier.

The occultation will start at 3 a.m. and will be visible from the Arctic and Eastern Europe. A full eclipse of the Moon is expected to happen in the night of March 3.

Saturn hid behind the Moon twice in 2001 - in November and in December.

Occultation is an astronomical event that occurs when one celestial object is hidden by another celestial object that passes between it and the observer. Compared to astronomical transits and eclipses, an occultation is said to occur when the nearer object appears larger and completely hides the more distant object.
