Bulgaria: Spiking the Punch Photo by Kameliya Atanasova (Sofia Photo Agency)

When Ataka first made it to Parliament it was fun, because there was finally someone (other from Ivan Kostov) to stir controversy. They were like that teenager who always spikes the punch. And just like a party where the punch has been spiked one too many times, everywhere they appear nowadays, people gag.

Engaging in fistfights, insulting MEPs before we were even in the EU, regularly disregarding court orders and the law, it seems that wherever they go Ataka-ists, in their desperate need to make a scene, forget themselves and end up putting too much booze in the punch.

Their latest endeavors just prove that they have become to think of themselves higher than any law. Mr. Siderov, a former journalist himself, should know by now how sensitive his colleagues in Bulgaria are when it comes to direct threats to their lives. Waltzing in a building full of cameras and reporters with about fifty obviously heated up bouncer-like men and then claiming it wasn't an attack, or an attempt to intimidate? I really thought he was smarter than that. Or at least better with words.

His Tuesday refusal to appear for interrogation when his presence has been subpoenaed is the second one in less than a month and seems to be a clear sign of disregard of the law. His angry-mob move on the newspapers has even triggered a cry of outrage from media freedom organizations abroad. Maybe it is time the mischievous teen got banned from all the parties on the block before he starts slipping everyone rohypnol.
