Bulgaria: Short on Everything Photo by Kameliya Atanasova (Sofia Photo Agency)

Bulgaria is still a poor EU member state. The country is always short on funds, has many debts; doctors, nurses, pensioners, teachers, literally the whole Bulgarian people scream for more money. Still the government cannot afford any unexpected expenses out of the year budget.

We are so short on money that we don't have enough to make the life of orphans better, to feed them, to fix the orphanages they live in. The situation is even worse with elections budget. No money for local mayors elections and for sure no money for MEP ones.

But we surely do have enough coins, or as we call them "stotinki" to squander on expensive 9,000 special e-calling cards, costing BGN 20 000 and to waste another BGN 30 000 for brochures that aim at popularising Bulgaria.

It is absurd to promote country's beauty, great historical past, unbelievable economic growth, etc. with brochures printed on luxurious paper when we don't have the money to pay salaries.

I say, let's follow the example of MP Ahmed Yusein, who introduced a draft law. If accepted, this law will empty ex-Sofia Heating Utility head's illegal bank accounts and the money from them will be given to tax payers to cover their heating bills.

Sadly, this is almost impossible to happen. But it will be not just sadly, but disastrous if the government doesn't find money for the MEP elections. Then it will turn out all those speeches and statements that Bulgaria will be the best fresh EU member the Union has seen have been said in vain.
