Bulgarian Doctors Find New Year's Charms in Man's Stomach

Doctors have found two old coins in the stomach of a 70-year-old man who believes they were charms from the traditional New Year's banitsa.

The man had to be treated for cirrhosis but tests showed that two foreign objects also needed to be removed from his duodenum. When the objects were removed, doctors were surprised to see to BGN 5 coins that had dropped out of currency about ten years ago.

The man didn't remember when he swallowed the coins so he believes they were charms in his holiday banitsa.

Tradition has it that Bulgarians hide little charms like pine twigs in the festive banitsa, with each charm bearing a different prophecy from the coming year. There's always at least one coin, and whoever gets is considered the luckiest as it symbolizes cash and prosperity throughout the year.
