Bulgarian Emigrants in Turkey Complain Against MEP Voting Law

Politics » BULGARIA IN EU | February 16, 2007, Friday // 00:00

Bulgarian emigrants in Turkey are to lodge an official complaint to the European Court against the newly adopted law, allowing MEP votes only by people, who have lived in a EU country member in the three months prior to the vote.

The initiative has been taken up by the Justice Association "Bahad", which is one of the biggest emigrant organizations in Turkey.

The association's leader Eshref Kahraman said the law deprives those Bulgarians from their constitutional rights.

"This is a discrimination," the leader added.

The complaint will be lodged when the law is published in the official Bulgaria's state newspaper.

The MEP voting law provoked serious arguments in the Parliament. The Turkish ethnic party even boycotted the plenary sessions in the past two days.
