The charity initiative " The Bulgarian Christmas 2006" is the most successful of all, compared to previous three years, country's president announced at a meeting for accounting the donations on Thursday.
The sum, set at more than BGN 2,6 M, has been collected by donations of ordinary people, including pensioners, private companies, Bulgarians, who live abroad and military officials from the country's missions in Afghanistan and Ashraf camp.
About BGN 50,000 in medical goods were also gathered during the campaign.
BGN 1000 were raised from SMS and phone calls.
Two private companies are the most generous contributors in the campaign's framework. Each of them gave for the cause the amount of BGN 100,000.
Part of the donations will be allocated for the treatment of 32 children and the other part - for renovating the equipment of ten specialized children clinics.
President Georgi Parvanov thanked the media as well as all the artists and sportsmen, who supported the initiative, "keeping up the dialogue with the nation all the time".
"It is very important to develop the charity but that should not release the state from its engagement to the health care system," Parvanov said.
