Bulgaria: Welcome to Comedy Land Photo by Kameliya Atanasova (Sofia Photo Agency)

How can one not love Bulgaria? Every time I get bored, all I need to do is browse through the newspapers for the latest crazy idea someone gives birth to in this loony country and life's fun again.

Today I had my wide pick of absurds. The Red Cross in Varna, for example, had suggested an excise tax on drugs as an option for decreasing the number of drug abuse cases. Here's something I would have never thought of - taxes on illegal substances. That one alone was enough to keep me smiling throughout the day, but no - the comedy was just getting started.

Then I watched taxi drivers explain on TV that they will up their tariff and tie it to the price of the A-95 gasoline, making it twice its current amount. The fact that most of the yellow devils have been refitted and are running on methane didn't seem to bother any of the drivers as they shamelessly moaned about the rising gasoline prices. Sweet. To add to that it turned out that the taxi driver killer the police boasted about catching by backtracking the car's route and getting camera footage, had actually turned himself in.

And if that's not hilarious enough for you, here's the cherry atop the cake: Bulgaria's Justice Ministry is planning to scratch the amnesty law because they can't cope with prisoners rioting. The same amnesty that was introduced to celebrate the joyous occasion of Bulgaria's EU accession. Whoever thought that releasing thousands of prisoners to roam free in the EU would bring them extra points must surely regret it now.

It would be quite funny if it wasn't all so sad.
