Bulgaria: Vox Populi(sm)

By Ivelina Puhaleva

The most delicate - and most exploited - aspect of democracy is its reference to the people, demos or populus, if you wish to call it. Abuse of democratic gears has led to the negative connotation of the term "populism", which surprisingly has dominated the public air in Bulgaria this week. Politicians of all specters, at different positions targeted each other with accusations of populism.

Whatever it is about, it has been tagged as "populistic". The president takes on the populist wave by calling to reopen two units of Kozloduy, the prime minister hinted. The mayor of Sofia follows the same line in his regular critiques to the energy minister, Ovcharov claimed. Socialists voice populistic ideas to hide behind and conceal their impotence to govern, rightists say. The opposition plays nothing else but populism in desperate efforts to glue its scattered leftovers, socialists retort.

Have you heard the voice of people? I have not. Then may be one thing is common for all these parties - populism is their way to hide from the people.
