Proud to be Bulgarian

I watched today a short movie on Bulgarian history which made me think of how our nationals leave the country for one or another reason.

Young Bulgarians leave the country either to study or to go, as they call it "out there", with the only hope to gain piles of money, get rich, get famous, or just get a better life.

This mass exodus of young labour force has been worrying the Bulgarian governors for several years now. They constantly think how to make them stay and develop projects, which supposedly will make the situation better for the young people.

This mass emigration hits hard the population growth in Bulgaria and some statisticians predict the number will continue do decrease drastically. The fact also worries the politicians.

Meanwhile there are thousands of ethnic Bulgarians spread on the territory of the former soviet republics which are dying to get Bulgarian citizenship. These people's ancestors have lived outside the country since the war for the freedom of Bulgaria, which is more than a century and a half ago.

Surprisingly these people are not allowed to get the so craved citizenship for simple law reasons. Bulgarian laws on giving citizenship to ethnic Bulgarians outside the country are not immigrant-friendly. The extreme surprise comes when I found out our laws are immigrant-friendly to all other ethnicities in the country, but not to the ones that really matter.

The short movie I watched was about the ancient Bulgarian khan and supreme warrior Asparuh. I felt proud of watching it at the beginning. Then I felt like a jerk, living in a country which just pretends to care for its nationals abroad when actually it doesn't give a damn about them.
