Bulgaria: Cheat the System Photo by Kameliya Atanasova (Sofia Photo Agency)

For the past several months every morning I woke up with the news of some or other protest that was to take place here, there and finally everywhere.

Protests got to excess after Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007. There were of course some remonstrations before, but after January 1 Bulgarians got a grip on the idea of civic society and decided to find out how this thing really works.

First came the protest of environmentalists over the much-disputed NATURA 2000 network, which aims at preserving wild life areas. Green Peace addicts flooded streets, protesting in every possible way to make the government vote over the inclusion of more and more territories. To this moment they haven't achieved a thing, except public annoyance of the noise they make.

Then came the protesters, whose own land is to be included in NATURA 2000. They protested because the eventual inclusion of these lands will impede their tourist business. The fact is none of them has ever thought of becoming a hotel owner and sell tourist services before they heard of the nature-preserving initiative of the EU. The only consequence again was public annoyance because of the noise.

In this case it is the government that stands between the hammer and the anvil. But the government prefers to stay with eyes closed and ears stuffed with cotton wool.

Third come Bulgaria's pensioners, who, despite the age that has crept over them, go out to keenly protest against their miserable pensions. They want a rise in pensions; the government wants peace and quietness.

Then come Bulgaria's doctors, nurses, teachers and almost everybody else. They want higher salaries, because the money they get at the moment is barely enough to cover their everyday expenses. The government hides its head in the sand.

Apparently Bulgaria's people wake up, and fight back the system's mock blindness and deafness but misery continues. Some say the future will be only chaos and anarchy. I say it doesn't really matter what you've got to say. The government turns the deaf ear; it's its way. As if we have a government tenancy. So, protesters, change your ways, cheat the system.
