They were among the first staunch allies of the US-led coalition. They did not falter to assist in Iraq reconstruction even when others were pulling out. Now their troops guard the Ashraf refugee camp, just 60 kilometers north of Baghdad.

But when the dictator from Baghdad was executed, all of them miraculously went mum.

Why do Bulgaria's foreign ministry act as if nothing has happened? Are they too humble, too indifferent or just have speech disorders?

It takes no digging in the memory to recall the Bulgarian Socialists' connection to the Oil-For-Food programme and the friendly ties of their predecessor, the communists, to the already late Iraqi president. It takes no hard thinking to see why this is a limbo where keeping silent is the only way to continue holding on.

Bulgarian politicians should once again thank the EU. For muting their deafening silence by loud celebrations.
