Romania Finally Lifts Transit Fees at Gyurgevo

Bucharest has decided to temporarily remove the fee for passing through the border checkpoint of Gyurgevo under the pressure of drivers.

Drivers, travelling through Gyurgevo to the Bulgaria's Danube town of Russe, say the fee of EUR 60 is illegal.

Dozens of trucks blocked the border checkpoint Saturday morning to protest against the fee, which they say is not justified after Bulgaria and Romania's accession to the European Union.

The fare, however, will be imposed again on Monday morning.

The issue has stirred a lot of controversy recently and even attracted the attention of Bulgaria's EU Commissioner Meglena Kuneva. She warned that the Romanian town's administration may have to face the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg for illegally collecting fares.
