"Meglena Kuneva is the new face of Bulgaria. Fresh from celebrating her country's accession to the European Union on January 1, the sleek, US-trained minister will this week take up a job in Brussels as the first Bulgarian member of the European Commission," the Financial Times wrote.
Kuneva, admits she is the one of the lucky ones - and not just because of the EUR 228,000 salary and trappings of life as a senior eurocrat she will now enjoy.
While she can freely work in Brussels, thousands of other Bulgarians do not enjoy the same right, the article points out.
"She has worked day and night for accession," FT cites an EU official who knows Kuneva from her time as Bulgaria's minister for Europe.
