Bulgaria: Free (of) Market

By Ivelina Puhaleva

If we could have held an inquiry on the most widely used word to describe this week's general sentiment it might be "freedom". The celebrative mood reigning with the country's entry to the EU has edged out the voices of worry on the capacity of Bulgarian enterprises to face the tough competition on the common European market. These worries are linked to both misunderstanding of the basics of the EU project and the apparent highly restrictive attitude of Brussels towards the newcomers.

Taking a look deeper into the practice of various EU institutions, you will certainly realise in the end what membership is about - freedom within certain restraints for everyone, at all levels. Learning to live by the rules is a good thing - particularly for Bulgarians, who are well known for being quite apt in abiding them.

But the membership is nothing like a game of hide-and-seek. Transparency and equality are fundamental - but in both directions. Limitless freedom would be of no good for Sofia or Brussels. The link between company-country-EU will be tightening and becoming clearer with time, but Bulgarian citizens and entities have already started feeling discriminated - crossing the borders, working abroad, seeing price hikes.

The sense of freedom should be kept alive and the players on the market are the most vivid embodiment of this freedom. The sooner restrictions on their competitive capacity are removed, the more realistic attitude will be nurtured in the European citizens here.
