The Democratic Party has taken control of the US Congress for the first time in 12 years. California representative Nancy Pelosi, the first woman to ever hold the powerful position of Speaker of the House, said it was an historic day for the Democrats. She announced the introduction of a raft of economic and social policy measures for the Democrats' first 100 hours in office. US President George W. Bush had earlier appealed for congressional unity and called on the Democrats to work together with his Republican party. The Democrats swept to victory in November's congressional polls taking advantage of widespread public frustration over the Bush administration's handling of the Iraq war.
