Bulgaria: Feels like Spring

By Zlatka Velichkova

Everything in Bulgaria reminds of spring at the moment. Bulgaria has already joined the so longed-for European Union. People in the streets are unusually lively maybe not so much because of the new status of Bulgaria but because they are still gripped with the spirit of the just past holidays.

The weather is extraordinarily warm for the season and snow is scanty. Spring is everywhere. New year, so many new beginnings.

Even the stores in Bulgaria took themselves seriously and started charging customers for see-through plastic bags which were three days ago given for free everywhere. After all you can't cram your purchases into your pockets! And since storeowners know that very well, they have indulged in the luxury of charging BGN 0.10 per each bag. So, a simple calculation brought me to the discovery that if a store is visited by 2,000 customers and each of them buys at least one see-through bag, that makes BGN 200 or a little over the minimum monthly wage in Bulgaria.

A friend of mine who is an owner of a very small and unpretentious neighbourhood shop said he buys plastic bags for not more than BGN 0.03 each. He also said he has at least 5,000 customers every day. I'll leave the calculations to you this time.

But lets not talk empty. I'll give you a real-time example of the spring feeling that spreads all around us.

When a shop assistant charged a pensioner for one such bag at the store this morning he said: "Is that because of the Union?" They told him: "Yes, new beginning, new rules..."

I think that the old tradition of Bulgarians going shopping with ugly-looking baskets is heading back for a new beginning.
