Bulgaria, Romania Scrap Border Barriers

Bulgarian and Romanian officials gathered Wednesday at the border checkpoint near Silistra-Calarasi to officially remove the barriers on this land frontier.

Silistra's district governor Svetlana Velikova, deputy prefect of Calarasi Cornel Coman, accompanied by the mayors of the two neighbouring cities, placed - in a symbolic gesture - the city keys in a common chest, a sign of friendship.

On the first day of the New Year, the local authorities from both sides of the Danube held a similar ceremony removing the customs barriers following the entry of Bulgaria and Romania into the EU.

The festive events, however, will not cease, but will follow up with a football championship, a EU test quiz, numerous concerts of children and folklore bands organized by the neighbouring citizens.
