Cyprus's trade unions have expressed their concerns over a possible flow of employees from Bulgaria and Romania now the two countries have joined the EU.
The trade unions are worried that Bulgarian and Romanian employees might endanger local labour market security, AFP said.
Cyprus is among the few EU member states that have not imposed limitations on Bulgarian and Romanian workers to its labour market. The trade unions are worried about the competition of the two countries since they offer cheaper labour force.
About 5,000 Bulgarians and Romanians are already working in Cyprus, mainly in the fields of tourism and industry. The trade unions think the number might double in 2007.
Employers think all such concerns are groundless and remind that there is almost no unemployment on the island.
