Customs officials in Bulgaria's northern border city of Silistra removed the barrier at the land checkpoint on January 1, 2007 at 1 a.m. sharp.

This was their symbolic way of celebrating Bulgaria and Romania's EU accession.

The border checkpoint in Silistra ceases functioning as of January 1, 2007. However, there will be no dismissals as the employees will follow the EU customs code and there will be established mobile groups.

In order to celebrate Bulgaria and Romania's EU accession there was projected a light rainbow over the Danube at midnight sharp that connected Silistra and Romanian Calarasi.
