Bulgarian Peak Becomes Highest EU Border Point

Politics » BULGARIA IN EU | January 1, 2007, Monday // 00:00

Bulgaria's peak Ruen (2291m) in the Osogovo Mountain has become the highest border point of the European Union.

Ruen is the highest peak in the Osogovo Mountain located over the western town of Kyustendil and close to Bulgaria's border with the Macedonia.

The western border landmarks still bear the communist-time names of Bulgaria and the Yugoslavia. Four years ago Bulgaria, Macedonia and the then Yugoslavia signed an agreement for changing the markings at the border.

The reason for the fact that the old inscriptions are still there is that there is no chairperson of the Macedonia commission responsible for this issue.
