Three days before Bulgaria's accession to the EU and one day before we offer you, our readers, a round-up of the events in 2006 and a forecast for 2007, I will dare make the forecast that the trial in Libya will be Sofia's first test for Brussels.

It has always been Brussels that put Sofia to the test. Up until the middle of December, when five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor were sentenced to death by a Libyan court. It was on that day that we remembered the passivity of the international community during the first six years since the beginning of the trial, the doomed "quiet diplomacy" of the Bulgarian governments and the vain efforts over the last year.

It was not for nothing that at the end of September I boldly fingered Bulgaria's "negotiator" - Deputy Foreign Minister Feim Chaushev - as being Most Out of Touch with Reality and nominated him for the World (Disinformation) Stupidity Award. Chaushev happily insisted the death-sentenced medics in Libya will be home soon. Only to blame misinterpretation later.

Now all eyes are on the EU. All prayers are with the medics. All hopes are for clear messages to Tripoli, real actions with real results.

For the average Bulgarian, the EU accession will not bring an overnight miracle. It will start a new transition period.

For the death-sentenced medics, however, the EU accession may bring the miracle of a new life.
