Bulgaria's prime minister demands that glamorous celebrations mark the country's entry into the European Union, despite the bad news coming from Libya.
"Bulgaria's accession to the European Union deserves to be celebrated," Sergey Stanishev commented Friday. He was reacting to proposals that the planned events are cancelled to mourn and protest against the death sentences of the five Bulgarian defendants in the HIV trial in Libya.
"The Bulgarian society can clearly voice its position on Libya's trial and get the attention of EU member states," Stanishev said.
Bulgaria's foreign ministry is yet to decide on how to increase the pressure on Libya as a full-fledged member of the European Union.
Sofia Mayor Boyko Borisov suggested Wednesday that Bulgaria should cancel all festive celebrations in solidarity with the nurses, sentenced to death in Libya. The two however were reported to have come to an agreement on the issue.
