Kuneva: Bulgaria May Sue Romania's Giurgiu

Bulgaria may sue the local authorities of the Romanian town of Giurgiu, which borders with Russe, the country's first EU commissioner Meglena Kuneva said.

The step might become necessary if Romania fails to abolish the long-time disputed border tax Giurgiu imposes on foreign vehicles crossing the Danube Bridge.

The issue was repeatedly discussed with the Romanian president, two Romanian governments and the Giurgiu authorities during Kuneva's term as a EU Affairs Minister but a consensus was not arrived at, she said.

Romania even refused to drop taxes for citizens of Russe.

Russe also used to impose taxes on foreign vehicles at the end of the 90s but the charge was abolished by the municipal authorities.

Kuneva said that if Romania continues insisting on keeping the taxes and fails to disregard EU legislation the case might end in the Court of First Instance in Luxembourg.
