Bulgaria: Genesis of Pessimism

By Ivelina Puhaleva

Christmas is a wonderful holiday, one of the most repenting-orientated and joy-instating days of the year, a fest of the family and of the individual, teaching people that after death always steps in life, that evil cannot endure longer to the might of good.

Bulgarians will remember this year's Christmas with many more things that will influence critically their lives from now on. I am not sure whether it is because of late snow, or gloomy events over the last few weeks, but Christmas mood seems to be almost absent around us. The information blackout that surrounds Bulgaria's entry to the EU and the major changes that will come along make these people uncertain in the future - a real source of pessimism, as EU opinion pollsters may say.

Bulgaria already has two safeguard clauses - one in food safety and another in aviation safety - slashed on the newcomer without a single word of reasonable comment by authorities. Why, when, what will come next? Who will pay for the sanctions? Well, the last question is almost rhetorical, as the state - respectively its citizens - pays off all pecuniary sanctions.

Few days before Bulgaria enters the EU, discouraging news are pouring in about expected increase of prices, tough limitations to use the Union's key freedom of movement and work, safeguards on major national economic sectors, etc.

The flashes of pessimism have already started rooting in Bulgarian minds and souls and Christmas is the time to make way to optimism. People deserve it, believe me!
