Sofia Airport authorities announced Santa Claus landed Thursday at noon on Bulgarian soil.

He came from Lapland with a charter flight of the Diamond Dynamics Airlines.

Santa was solemnly welcomed at the VIP Terminal and following Bulgarian traditions children in folklore costumes presented him with home baked bread and honey.

Deputy Transport Minister Daniela Nikoforova, Deputy Foreign Minister Gergana Grancharova and head of the Bulgarian Red Cross Hristo Grigorov have prepared to be the first to welcome Santa.

More than 100 Sofia orphans, children of deceased officers from the Bulgarian Railroads Company and children of refugees were patiently waiting for the elderly man. The children saw a second surprise as minutes after Santa Claus landed, came a helicopter full of gifts.

Children left the airport holding in their hands boxes with presents personally received from Santa Claus and children from the orphanages in Doganovo, Vidrare and Dolna Banya have now new bicycles, skateboards and rollers and scooters.
