Bulgaria: Fade to Black Photo by Kameliya Atanasova (Sofia Photo Agency)

A day after the verdict against Bulgaria's medics was pronounced, slightly forgotten figures from all spheres of Bulgaria's public life saw in it a chance to shine anew with insightful comments that all sounded the same and said nothing new. Sofia Mayor Boyko Borisov also had a comment at the ready, though his were actually a number of suggestions, all inspired by western melodramas.

Let's face it, the Bulgarian people may have become the zebras that sit quietly as the lions tear apart their friend, as he so graphically put it, but even in the time when they were brave lions, flicking off switches was never a real custom for showing solidarity. Visiting a family in grief to offer food or help, or silent comfort... this is more our style.

"The whole world should see that Bulgaria is grieving while everybody else is celebrating," the Mayor said, adding that when they watch the TV from their jail cells on Christmas and see the lights flicker off the nurses would know we are all with them at heart. To the five women, who have spent eight years in a nightmare few could bear, this type of solidarity would mean little. But it would surely do a lot to the mayor's image of greatness. What those women really need is to see their loved ones, hear their voice, hug them again and finally taste freedom. So instead of wasting airtime on fading lights, show them those faces or gather the cash to send someone to hug them. It wouldn't be grand, the whole world may not see it, but it may actually have a meaning to someone.
