Bulgaria and Romania's EU accession as of January 1, 2007 will bring about changes in the three major institutions of the union - the European Parliament, the EU Council and the European Commission.

Romania will contribute to the EP 35 MEPs and Bulgaria - 18, which will increase the current number of representatives in the institution from 732 to 785.

In September 2005 Bulgaria and Romania sent observers whose task was to get acquainted with the way the EP functions.

Bulgaria and Romania will have full-fledged MEPs as of January 1, 2007.

The elections for MEPs in Bulgaria will probably be held in May 2007.
