Bulgaria: Doctor Georgiev: Death Verdict on Bulgarians is Monstrosity Photo by BNT

Doctor Zdravko Georgiev is husband of Kristiyana Vulcheva, who is in a Libyan prison together with the four other Bulgarian nurses and the Palestinian doctor. Doctor Georgiev was also imprisoned for the HIV infection for the 426 Libyan children, but court released him two years ago. Although free, he cannot leave the country as Libyan authorities deny him a visa.

He was approached by Darik Radio's special reporter in Tripoli Evgenia Marcheva to share his view on the Tuesday court decision that confirmed the death sentences of the medics. *

Here is how he commented the verdict: "It is atrocious. You should ask our western allies and the government for a comment, not me. This is monstrosity, monstrosity. They have been deriding with us for more than eight years."

Q: Two weeks ago you said a confirmation of the death sentences would leave the nurses psychically devastated, but what do you think today?

A: I think the same and I do not speak in vain. I'm citing their words. The even agreed on life sentences just to avoid the death verdict. I don't know anymore.

Q: Why death again, how do you explain yourself this sentence?

A: Seems the talks have stumbled somewhere on the way. It's evident that these people do not know what "negotiations" means. The important thing is that the whole scientific world, all Nobel Prize winners, all acknowledged professors were on our side and proved the infection was there before the nurses came. But as you can see, Libyans just don't get it.

Q: How much time will this AIDS trial continue?

A: I cannot say anything at the moment. The procedure is to wait one month for the motives, then we'll have to wait for another month to appeal the verdicts.

Q: Doctor, what will you say to your wife when you see her?

A: I will give her courage.
