A Bulgarian observer to the European Parliament called "a farce" the Libyan court decision to send five Bulgarian medics on death row.
Evgeni Kirilov, one of 18 Bulgarian observers to the EU's legislature, said "It's the justice of a dictator's regime".
"The regime is afraid to admit the faults of its health care system," Kirilov pointed out.
Evgeni Kirilov called on the European Union to be more active in the case.
"We received enormous international support but evidently this is not enough, there must be more acute political action on behalf of the EU, because on the first of January they will become EU citizens," the Bulgarian parliamentarian was adamant.
Bulgaria joins the EU as full-fledged member state next month.
Germany, which takes over the rotating presidency of the European Union on January 1, most recently led international calls for the six to be acquitted, as respected scientific journals in Britain rejected the charges.
